Hearts and Minds Trial: Metformin or Atorvastatin for major depressive disorder
New treatment trial for major depressive disorder.
Researchers at Deakin University are investigating the effectiveness and benefits of adjunctive metformin or atorvastatin for major depression.
The Hearts and Minds Trial is investigating whether metformin or atorvastatin (compared to a placebo) helps to reduce symptoms of major depression and improve quality of life. Major depressive disorder may, in part, be caused by inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain. Metformin, a commonly used medication used to treat diabetes and atorvastatin, a commonly used medication used to treat high cholesterol both reduce inflammation and improve neuronal function. They may help in reducing the symptoms of major depression, in addition to preventing common medical disorders like diabetes and heart disease.
The Hearts and Minds Trial has clinics in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart and is looking for participants 18 years or older with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder to take part. During the study participants will take metformin, atorvastatin or placebo, in addition to their usual treatments, for 16 weeks. Participants will meet with a researcher for up to 6 visits at one of our clinics. There is no cost to take part in the trial, and once enrolled our participants receive reimbursement for travel expenses.
If you or someone you know;
- Has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder,
- Currently has low mood,
